Updating of IRS 40426 in relation to the use of electronic seals

The Group of Experts on Seals is helping implement the proposed changes concerning electronic seals. Work updating the relevant documents also continues.

The 12th meeting of the CIT Group of Experts on Seals took place on 10 May 2022 by video-conference.

The meeting further explored the topic of electronic seals. Implementation of the relevant amendments to UIC IRS 40426 “Guidelines for sealing wagons and intermodal transport units” continues. UIC agreed with the changes proposed by the expert group. It now falls to the UIC Freight Forum to approve the proposed modifications. The proposed modifications will also need to be cleared with the CER Customs Group. Should neither body object, UIC will be able to publish IRS 40426.

Since implementing the provisions governing electronic seals requires a comprehensive review by various working groups, it was decided to invite a representative of the CER Customs Group to the expert group’s next meeting.

The coding of seals in the CIM consignment note data flow may also impact the future work of the Group of Experts on Seals. This topic was discussed at the CIM Working Group’s 32nd meeting on 22-23 June 2022. The CIT GS will thus provide members of the Group of Experts on Seals with the relevant outcomes and information. Given its importance, the topic will also be on the agenda of the next meeting of the Group of Experts on Seals.

The 13th meeting is set to be held in Strasbourg on 1 December 2022 at the invitation of FRET SNCF.
