Progress on electronic seals

The 11th meeting of the CIT Group of Experts on Seals took place on 30 November 2021 by video-conference.

The subject of electronic seals has been on the Group of Experts’ agenda since 2020. In 2021, the Group of Experts has mainly been occupied with updating the checklist for sealing wagons (Appendix 1 to the CIT Freight Manual (GTM-CIT)) in connection with the use of electronic seals. The associated proposed amendment was submitted to the 31st meeting of the CIM Working Group on 1-2 December 2021 for further discussion.

Another proposed modification has been drawn up to update the UIC guidelines for sealing wagons and intermodal transport units (IRS 40426) in connection with the use of electronic seals. The proposed amendment has been forwarded to UIC and is currently being examined by experts within the relevant UIC bodies. Since a project on electronic seals has also begun at EU level, it is important to appraise proposed modifications carefully prior to implementation in order to avoid any contradictions between the various sets of rules and regulations.

The CIT General Secretariat and the Group of Experts on Seals wish to warmly welcome the new members of the group, Ms Claudia Voltz (FRET SNCF) and Ms Eszter Jenei (Rail Cargo Hungaria), and look forward to fruitful collaboration.

The 12th meeting of the Group of Experts on Seals will take place on 10 May 2022, either at CIT headquarters in Bern or by video-conference, depending on pandemic-related developments.
