Latest developments of the WEG (Waste Expert Group)

Latest developments of the WEG (Waste Expert Group) within the UIC Transport of Dangerous Goods Expert Group (UIC TDG EG) following the meeting on 7-8 November 2023 in Sopron (Hungary)

The second meeting in 2023 of the UIC TDG EG was organized on 7-8 November 2023 in Sopron (Hungary) at the kind invitation of Gysev Cargo - Raaberbahn Cargo. The CIT is continuing its good cooperation with the UIC by taking part in these two days expert group’s meeting.

On this occasion, the CIT presented the developments of the Waste Expert Group (WEG) since its creation in spring 2023, with explanations on the different steps already realised, namely discussions within the two online meetings in May and in July as well as the CIT Workshop held in Bern on 12 and 13 October. The CIT also explained in detail the CIT legal products currently under development, namely the traffic irregularity reporting sheet and the information-sheet on the international transport of waste for rail carriers. If approved, these two products should be implemented by 1 July 2024. Adaptations to the CIM consignment note may also be envisaged and were discussed at the last CIM working group on 29 and 30 November 2023. It remains to be seen what the CIM Committee's position will be on whether and in what extent to implement these adaptations.

Furthermore, the WEG will meet online next on 6th February 2024 to discuss these issues and the next important steps to consider in 2024, starting maybe with a second workshop and the definition of a strategy to give impetus at political and decision-making level to a revision of the current regulations (Regulation 1013/2006).
