The AJC and its key achievements under the CER Ticketing Roadmap
What is the AJC?
The Agreement on Journey Continuation (AJC) is a joint commercial agreement between participating railway undertakings, established under the CIT umbrella several years ago, with strong support from the CER. Since 2021, the AJC has been an integral element of the CER Ticketing Roadmap, which is designed to enhance the passenger experience of planning, booking and travelling internationally by rail.
Its core purpose is to ensure that — when a disruption occurs — passengers holding a ticket for a participating railway undertaking can continue their journey with the undertaking for which they hold the ticket at no additional cost, even if they are travelling on separate tickets.
Without the AJC, passengers — especially those with non-flexible tickets — would often be required to purchase a new ticket if they missed a connection due to a delay or cancellation.
AJC Achievements up to 2025
As of July 2025, 23 railway undertakings are parties to the AJC, with further railway undertakings expressing interest in joining the agreement.
To raise awareness of the AJC’s benefits, most participating railway undertakings now display AJC information on their websites. Additional resources on the AJC are available on both the CIT and CER (the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies) websites.
CIT, with support from UIC (the International Union of Railways), is also working to modernise key AJC processes. Until now, passengers usually needed a paper delay confirmation — issued at a ticket counter or by railway staff — to benefit from the AJC. In the future, this process will be simplified through digital means. The rollout of a digital solution is underway, and passengers will benefit more and more as an increasing number of railways implement that digital solution. However, paper certification remains possible.
While the AJC continues to evolve and requires ongoing practical improvements, it demonstrates how railway undertakings can deliver pragmatic solutions through cross-border cooperation.
