The CIT manuals are reference documents for the use of various types of consignment note and for the procedures to be followed for international freight traffic by rail. The parties (customers and carriers and carriers between themselves) must agree to them before they can be applied.
The CIT Freight Traffic Manual (GTM-CIT) specifies the standard way international carriage of freight by rail is to be performed so as to ensure the integrity of the contract of carriage. It lists the processes involved in providing international carriage of freight. For each process, it provides a working sheet defining the purpose of the process, the activities to be performed, the timescales for the tasks and the participants involved.
These manuals are supplemented by a checklist on sealing wagons and UTI and specifications for an electronic CIM/SMGS consignment note. It should be noted that specifications for the electronic CIM consignment note are contained in the consignment note manuals and in the GTM-CIT.
